In 2021 the Department of Industry, Science, Energy and Resources was to release publications to define a roadmap for 6 priority manufacturing areas as identified by the Modern Manufacturing Strategy. They were for:

• Defence
• Food and Beverage
• Medical Products
• Recycling and Clean Energy
• Resources Technology and Critical Minerals Processing.
• Space.

The policy team needed to, not only develop the content itself, but prepare a print and digital version of each roadmap in less than 3 months.

The job

Overleaf Communication was engaged as an embedded resource to consult on content strategy and digital best practice, accessibility, as well as general writing and editing oversight.

The approach

While embedded in the team, I:

• conducted a content audit of existing manufacturing information on industry.gov.au
• baselined Google analytics data for related content and provided insights to inform content development
• reviewed policy materials and outcomes of roadmap taskforce deliberations
• collaborated with subject matter experts to develop content to meet mandatory government accessibility requirements, user need, and web best practice
• worked with policy teams to simplify charts and diagrams, writing clear and comprehensive text alternatives for complex data and processes
• educated policy teams on user-centred design methodology and best practice
• developed a content model and detailed information architecture
• managed content development activities and workflows through a tracker and close liaison with graphic design and web teams
• coordinated cross-linking with the web team for Business.gov.au, and launch timeframes with the media and communication teams
• assisted with desktop publishing design and layout for the print versions of the roadmaps
• provided ad-hoc guidance on the Australian Government Style Manual, plain English, and grammar.

The result

The 6 roadmaps were successfully launched by the department and its minister between February and March 2021.
